New Children’s Book ‘The Dragonfly Door’ to Help Families with Loss & Change
Hardcover book contains lush illustrations by award-winning artist; customers may designate percentage of sales to non-profit

MAPLE PLAIN, MINN., February 8, 2007 -- A new illustrated children’s book, The Dragonfly Door, follows two young insect friends and the struggles one of them endures when her friend disappears.  In the process, the surviving friend learns about loss and change.

“This book has universal appeal and a powerful message for those who are grieving,” said John Adams, co-founder of Feather Rock Books, Inc. and author of The Dragonfly Door.  Adams was inspired to write The Dragonfly Door in 2004, after reading an article about Anne Brooker, the teenage founder of a non-profit organization called The Dragonfly Project.  Brooker sends a packet of dragonfly-related condolence materials to grieving families, including a dragonfly parable written in the 1940s.  Inspired by Anne’s work, Adams and his wife became donors and volunteers.

The Dragonfly Door
features Lea and Nym, wingless dragonflies living underwater in a marsh.  When Lea doesn’t come home one night, Nym searches the marsh for her, but Lea is gone.  Then, exhausted and sad, Nym discovers that her friend has died.  Through what may be interpreted as a vision or dream, Nym receives a comforting glimpse of what Lea has become.

“We’ve heard from many people who have found comfort and inspiration from this story,” Adams said.  “We hope parents will use the book as a tool to help them express their views on life and death with their children.”

“This is a timeless story that provides parents and children with the opportunity to discuss and explore the mystery of death,” said Clea Adams, executive director of Feather Rock Books, Inc.  “Through the characters Lea and Nym, parents can help children identify the beauty and hope in all cycles of life.”

For each sale of The Dragonfly Door, customers may donate a percentage of sales to The Dragonfly Project through the Feather Rock Books, Inc. website.  They will need to follow the “Books for a Cause” designation through checkout.  Other non-profits will be added in the coming months.

Barbara L. Gibson illustrated The Dragonfly Door.  Gibson has illustrated more than 3 dozen books, including the National Geographic Society’s award-winning six-book Little Learners’ Library.  She resides with her husband in Olney, Maryland.
